Profile Information

About Me, My Profession and/or My Company:
An epidemiologist by training, I have been a human capital strategist and consultant for the past 10 years. I started WellSolve Health Research Network in 1999 with the aim to make a difference in the healthcare workforce through training, career solutions, employer resources, along with a variety of personal and professional development tools and networking/learning events.

In 2004, I founded Diversity HealthWorks in order to focus on being a catalyst and destination point for people committed to diversity and cultural competency in healthcare. We believe healthcare's transformation starting with the workforce and touching all who have a stake (that means all of us) is the key to organizational success and the success of our healthcare system.

Medical Interpretation Links

Since the announcement of the National Medical Interpreter Certification developed by the International Medical Interpreter Association (IMIA) and Language Line University (LLU) collaborative, several other press releases, questions and comments have arisen. We hope this Industry Guide will provide insight into recent developments and openly and candidly address questions that may be on the minds of many. To see the Industry Guide FAQ Document, please go to http://www.imiaweb.org/uploads/pages/195_2.pdf

We need your help to spread the word. It is interpreters that hold the key to the success of this certification program. It will be very important for interpreters to be the first ones to undertake, validate, and endorse their own national certification program. Passion and Reason

When we get down to the business of organizational transformation the road to success is difficult at best. If we desire for the principles of inclusion and cultural competence to be central to transformation the difficulty can be exacerbated.

Most people I know have some type of passion in life. This passion is coupled and/or often met with the energy of reason.

In the the classic book, The Prophet by Khalil Gibran, the speaker says about Reason and Pas… Continue

Will short-term thinking's results ever jolt us into reality?

When I started this post it was late Tuesday evening January 5th, and I wanted to simply get on-line and finally say Happy New Year to all of you who have been so tremendously supportive of this blog and our network and the mission that Diversity HealthWorks believes is absolutely critical to healthcare being all that it needs to be for this country.

Thank you for your support. I cannot fully express my appreciation in a writing, but know that the conversations generated, and the movement made… Continue

The Logic of What Might Be

We have a healthcare (insurance) reform bill passed in theory and probably soon to be passed in actuality.

The next question is: what does this mean? What does it mean, politically, functionally, to you, to me, to many others that don't have the wherewithal, desire, or ability (as a result of no connectivity or not having connectivity, if you know what I mean).

Well, if I summed it up quickly, it would go like this:

What does it mean politically?
It means that we have a president and a… Continue

Has anyone heard of Oral Health America ? I found them this morning--their goal is to assist and educate patients without insurance or access to care. Interesting fact from their site: for every one patient without dental insurance, there are two minority patients without insurance.

I enjoyed reading your posts about Medical Insurance/Citizen Insurance reform. I am concerned that the new legislation will not deliver all that we need.

Thanks Amri...I will read and do all I can to add to my current skills; as far as diversity in the public sector of healthcare I have had experience with the aging population, respiratory asssistant for an oxygen company and have raised five children; where I lack is the hands on day to day issues people have when they are sick (my children were pretty healthy in their growing years) and/or are batteling a disease...I feel books can only teach you so much...once you have that head knowledge you need the hands on experience...but I will read what you have on this site. Thanks for taking the time.
